Introducing: Young
Entrepreneurs
Academy
Beginning with the 2010-11 school
year, the Johnstown School District will be an area
frontrunner, and one of only 16 schools state-wide,
offering students the opportunity to participate in a
groundbreaking educational program known as the
Young Entrepreneurs Academy
(YEA!). Administered as a credit-bearing elective
through the high school business department, YEA! will
partner with the local business community to provide
students in grades 9-12 with a course that takes them
through all of the steps of starting and running a
real company. Follow this link to

MyNutriKids Program
The GJSD Food Service Department is excited to provide parents a
convenient, easy and secure online pre-payment service
to deposit money into their child’s school meal account
at any time. The MyNutriKids pre-payment plan helps the
lunch line move along faster, allowing children more
time to eat lunch and be with friends. It also provides
parents with the ability to print out a copy of their
child’s eating history report.
Visit the
GJSD Food Service Department page to learn more
about the MyNutriKids program.
Please
remember to place money on your child's account in advance,
or to send money for your child's lunch on a daily basis.
Students at the junior and senior high level are not
permitted to charge their lunch and elementary student
charges are limited, pursuant to the food service
department's
lunch charge procedure.

GJSD Among
39 Schools Recognized for Excellence in State Audits
On February 9, 2010, New
York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a
report summarizing audits of all 733 school
districts and BOCES within NYS for the last five years.
The report states that 39 of those districts “were
particularly well run, with well-developed financial
policies, effective internal controls, and well-managed
operations.” The Greater Johnstown School District is
proud to be one of the 39 districts to receive such
positive recognition,
as reported in the February issue of the NYSSBA
publication "On Board."
Universal
Pre-Kindergarten
The Greater Johnstown School District Universal Pre-kindergarten
program is continuing to accept applications for the 2010-11 school year for
children who will be four years old on or before December 1, 2010 and
who reside in the district. Although all sessions are
currently full, we
do maintain a waiting list for placement in the event of a
vacancy. The Universal Pre-kindergarten program
addresses instructional components, cognitive skills,
social and emotional development, and physical skills of
youngsters. The program does not require income
eligibility. For more information on the Johnstown
Universal Pre-kindergarten program or to receive an
application, contact Warren Street School’s main office

facility at Crescendoe Road was adopted by a vote of 691
in favor and 208 opposed; while the proposition for the
lease of two school buses was adopted by a vote of 639

Candidates Paul VanDenburgh (612), Jennifer Sponnoble
(569) and Douglas Dougherty (495) were the top vote
getters in a six way race for three seats on the Board
of Education and will be sworn in at the July 2010

Residents Provide Valuable Feedback on Bus Garage in an
Exit Survey
Voters exiting the JHS and Ephratah polling sites on May
18 had the opportunity to provide the Board of Education
with their input on possible solutions for housing the
district's transportation & facilities departments. Of
the 955 residents who voted in person that day, 291
stopped to complete an anonymous survey in which they
could choose from three possible options. Purchasing the
32,000 sq ft building currently being leased at
Crescendoe Road was favored by 130 respondents; 121
individuals preferred entering into a 20-25 year lease
for that same premises; and 38 people supported building
a new 5,000 sq ft facility on district property. Two
people wrote-in to suggest contracting out for
transportation services in lieu of choosing one of the
three options presented. The Board of Education thanks
residents for taking the time to participate and
providing valuable feedback for the district's
consideration.
New York
State Report Cards
Each spring, the New York State Department of Education
releases various statistics and information about NYS
school districts (e.g., enrollment figures;
annual results
on Regents examinations, Regents Competency Tests and ELA,
math and science state test results, etc.) from the
previous school year, to help to keep the public
informed about the performance of public schools. To

Local Government Financial Data Available Online
The New York State Comptroller's Office recently announced
that local government financial data is now available
through their
Open Book New York Web site.
The site contains revenue and spending data for
more than 3,100 counties, cities, towns, villages, schools
and fire districts from 1996 to 2006 and is intended to be
updated quarterly. The data is from local government
financial reports filed with the Division of Local
Government and School Accountability.
Practice Tests
Online at Local Libraries
The
Johnstown Public Library now has access to online databases
that help students practice for a variety of tests, such as
Firefighter and Real Estate exams, GED, SAT, ACT and GRE
exams, grammar and math skills, and much more. The database
is called Practice Tests from Learning Express Library,
which can be found by visiting Johnstown Public Library’s
public access catalog at
www.mvls.info. The practice tests can be found in
the “Databases” link under the “Education” section, off of
the homepage. The process is so simple — the sample tests
can be accessed by using your library card. If you only have
a short amount of time to take an online test, you can save
your work and revisit it later, what a great resource!
