The Greater Johnstown School District is one of 145 school districts and BOCES in New York state to receive the Utica National Insurance Group’s “School Safety Excellence Award” for 2022 at the Titanium level. The honor is presented annually and recognizes school districts’ safety efforts as they work to help keep students, staff and visitors safe.

“It is evident to everyone in our school community that our Director of Facilities Mr. David Wood and his team take tremendous pride in their work throughout the district,” Assistant Superintendent Alicia D. Koster said. “Not only do they keep our facilities running and functional, they do so in a manner that puts the safety of our staff, students, and visitors first. This award is a wonderful testament to their hard work and dedication. As a district, we are thrilled they have been recognized for this very prestigious accolade and grateful for the opportunity to highlight our talented staff members.”

Utica National’s School Safety Excellence Award Program has three levels – titanium, platinum, and gold – in which schools can earn a meritorious distinction by meeting specific criteria to enhance overall safety. Categories covered include bullying prevention programs, playground safety and other areas, and are measured using specific, quantifiable surveys.

“Safety and health concerns continue to be a priority in our school districts,” explained Brian Saville, Senior Vice President in Utica National’s Educational Institutions Unit. “Districts that go ‘above and beyond’ to provide a safe, healthy and focused culture for learning are to be applauded, and we’re pleased to count the Greater Johnstown School District among them.”
