GJSD’s nine Odyssey of the Mind teams made their mark at last weekend’s Region 21 competition at Broadalbin-Perth Central School District, with four teams advancing to the New York state tournament being held at the NY State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on April 5.
Of the nine Johnstown teams that competed, two teams made up of 10 second grade students were in the younger primary division. Primary teams don’t “compete,” but were able to experience Odyssey for the first time! This was a great practice year to learn about the program and start exploring their creative side. Some of the primary students were even asked to help out during the awards ceremony.
The seven remaining teams all won trophies, but only four teams will advance to the state competition. Johnstown students get to keep their ribbons and metals, but trophies will be put on display at their respective schools with a team pictures. Please look for them the next time you visit one of the schools.
Three advancing teams came from Knox Middle School, and one team represents JHS. Congratulations to the following teams:
Problem #3 – “The Classics … Cooking With Books”
Division 1: 5th grade team coached by Aaron & Justine Lewis came in 2nd place and won a wild card spot to advance on

Division 2: 6th & 8th grade team (representing JHS) coached by Julie Risley & Lori Leonard took 1st place

Problem #4 – “Save Me Structure”
Division 2: 6th grade team coached by Jessica Sweet & Stephanie Wilson were unchallenged, therefore taking 1st place

Problem #5 – “Astronomical Odyssey”
Division 1: 5th grade team coached by Holly Nellis & Elana Ilnicki came in 1st place out of five teams (which was the most competition at any problem or division)

Congratulations to all of our Johnstown Ohmers! We would also like to thank our longtime Odyssey of the Mind District Coordinator Kristin Meashaw (pictured below), and OOTM District Assistants Erin Fazzio and Cassandra Faville.
